Thinking From The Square

Thinking from the Square is a series of nine prints made with etching (aquatint) and Chine Colle. It presents an undifferentiated vision of the 'real' and the imaginary.

My interest in geometric abstraction comes from pre-Columbian architecture. Spring and Autumn equinoxes are visible at the Kukulkan pyramid, announced by the formation of a serpent made of triangular cast shadows in its stair handrail.

The abstract compositions of the prints resulted from playing with cardboard structures. Cast shadows from the panels produced a variety of tonal values and new possibilities for space configuration.

The characters were made of tights and cushion fill. Their faces are distorted by photographic manipulation, forcing them to fit in square shapes.

Some pieces further explore the etching’s sculptural qualities, presenting recessed relief on the paper by employing blind debossing, a plate without ink.

I constructed large origami dodecahedrons, which I called stars. They were involved in the creative process and displayed alongside the prints. Their multiple white faces played with light, producing diverse shades of grey echoing the aquatints.
